Built for Diesel and Heavy-Duty Engines

Heavy engine work changes the sizing math. Injector bores and glow plug ports are wider than automotive spark plug wells, cylinders are deeper, and you are often working around a frame rail rather than over an open bay. That points to a larger probe on a longer, stiffer cable.

Probe and cable sizing

8.5 mm is the workhorse diameter for diesel — it carries brighter LEDs and a larger sensor, which matters in a soot-darkened cylinder. Semi-rigid cable in 1 m, 2 m, or 3 m lets you push the tip in and have it stay put; 3 m covers the reach on inline-six and larger V-block engines. Where access is tight, a 6.2 mm probe on the same platform gets you in.

What technicians check

Cylinder wall glazing and scoring before a rebuild quote, valve and seat condition on high-hour engines, injector tip carbon, EGR cooler fouling, turbo housing and impeller damage, and DPF face condition — all without teardown, and all recordable to a TF card for the work order.

Choosing the Right Borescope

Which scope reaches deep into large diesel or truck engines?

Choose a longer 2m–3m semi-rigid cable so you can reach deep into big diesel blocks and still steer the tip, and use a 6.2mm or smaller probe head — an 8.5mm head won't fit most diesel bores. The F606B (4-way, up to 3m) and the 6.2mm N308S/N306 semi-rigid options are common picks for heavy-truck work.

What probe diameter fits diesel injector or glow-plug holes?

Use a 6.2mm or smaller probe for diesel glow-plug and injector bores — an 8.5mm head is too large and won't fit into a diesel engine. Measure the bore before ordering.

Can it withstand diesel engine heat and oil?

The probe and cable are IP67 oilproof and handle diesel, coolant and grime — wipe clean after use. Inspect once the engine has cooled; the probe isn't rated for sustained high heat.
